Mouse Movement Tester

The movement tester draws the trail your cursor leaves and measures path length, net displacement and speed. A path much longer than the straight line from start to finish means your motion was wobbly; a close match means it was smooth.

How to use the Movement Tester

  1. Move into the test area and start moving the mouse.
  2. Draw a straight line from one side to the other.
  3. Read path distance, net distance and speed.
  4. Repeat with slow and fast movements to compare.

Understanding your results

Path distance adds up every small wiggle, while net displacement is simply start to end. The ratio between them is a quick measure of how direct your movement was.

This reflects your hand, surface and mouse together. For stillness rather than direction, try the jitter test.

Worked example: path versus net distance

The tester reports two lengths. Path distance adds up every wiggle along your route. Net distance is just the straight line from where you started to where you stopped.

Suppose you draw a line across the area and the tool reports a path of 1,250 px and a net distance of 1,000 px. The ratio net ÷ path is 1,000 ÷ 1,250 = 0.80. A perfectly straight movement would score 1.0, so 0.80 means about a fifth of your travel was wobble or correction.

Repeat the test with slow and fast movements. Many people find that speed changes the ratio, and that using the forearm for long lines gives a straighter path than using only the wrist.

Tips for meaningful comparisons

  • Keep settings constant. DPI, pointer speed and acceleration all change how your hand maps to the screen. Note them before comparing results.
  • Use the same movement each time. Draw the same line, at the same speed, over the same distance.
  • Compare surfaces fairly. A cloth pad and a hard pad can give different results because of the friction and tracking they provide.
  • Do not judge the sensor from one run. Hand tremor and grip have a big effect. Try several runs, and if you suspect a tracking problem, check with the jitter test too.

Record your ratio over several sessions, because a small improvement in directness is easier to see across a week than in a single run.

If the cursor speed feels wrong, check your DPI with the DPI analyzer and read how to change mouse DPI. For Mac users, this Mac guide explains the system tracking settings.

Movement Tester FAQ

Is a long path a sign of a bad sensor?

Not necessarily. Hand tremor, grip and surface all affect it. Compare across mice on the same surface.

What affects movement speed readings?

Your DPI, pointer speed, acceleration settings and how fast you move all contribute.

Does it measure DPI?

No. Use the DPI analyzer.
